A Woman With a Pen

My name, Penda, means "Love" in the African language of Swahili. I try to live my life by exuding the love of Christ and being kind. When my name and my spiritual gift of mercy collide I put on my writing coach hat and help writers record their story. I believe that we all have a story to tell and words are important, whether we speak, think, say, or write them.

I am a graduate of Bowling Green State University with an M.Ed in Training and Development. I attended, and graduated from Wilberforce University, the oldest privately owned HBCU.

After reading Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," in eighth grade, I understood the importance of telling my story, no matter how painful. I wrote when I needed to release the emotions that were weighing me down. The same instructions that I gave myself as a writer is what I teach others to do:

  • Write until it hurts and then write more

  • Write through the pain

  • Remember: Scribes record history and you have a calling to pick up your pen.
